High-End Assassinations

Once Frankie has taken the truck off your hands at the abandoned mansion on Sacramento Avenue - to complete the mission Truck Hustle - you'll be able to access the assassination side-missions. Now, whenever you get a hankering for some hitman action, head to the payphone across the road from the weapons shop in Alderney. Here you'll liaison with a man known only as "Fixer", who represents clients with certain... 'unsavoury' requests. Over the phone he'll hand down instructions regarding the target and his/her location, in addition to providing a small stock of weapons and a body armour vest nearby. More often than not these items won't be necessary, but it's always worth nabbing some free weaponry when the opportunity arises.

In total there's nine different assassination missions, with each additional one unlocked via the completion of the previous. Just like Stevie's text message vehicle thefts, the assassination missions are offered in random order, and are classed as side-missions, thus not essential to progress the story (but still counting towards your total completion statistic). Pro tip: It's usually better for Niko's health to avoid close quarters combat where possible. As such we recommend you always be equipped with a sniper rifle and/or an RPG - these will prove invaluable in taking out the targets from a safe distance.

Friends and girlfriends

Friends and girlfriends become available as you progress through the storyline. There are five friends and five girlfriends in total, and each character has a unique set of preferences. Each friend (and three of the girlfriends) provide special unlockable abilities in return for maintaining good relationships with them.

Encounters

There are fourteen "random characters" in total, and they each become available at different stages during the storyline. These characters are represented by the green male and female icons on the radar, and approaching them will trigger a cutscene. These characters are mostly minor characters that featured briefly during some missions, but who didn't have a huge part to play in the story. Completing all of the random character encounters contributes 5% towards 100% completion of the game. You can find a map of all their locations on the in-game internet by visiting "whattheydonotwantyoutoknow.com."

GTA 4: Chapter 1 mission guide

The first chapter of Grand Theft Auto IV begins in Broker, Liberty City, where you take missions from Roman Bellic, Little Jacob and a group of hardcore Eastern European characters. During this chapter, Niko reveals his motivations for coming to Liberty City.

GTA 4: Chapter 2 mission guide

You now have a new safehouse in Bohan, after the last one was burned down by the Russians. Roman says it's time to "start over again." In this chapter, Mallorie introduces you to two of her friends - Manny Escuela and Elizabeta Torres - both of whom provide work for Niko. Algonquin is unlocked after the mission "Blow Your Cover," and Alderney becomes unlocked at the end of the chapter.

GTA 4: Chapter 3 mission guide

In this chapter, Niko has an opportunity to work under mobsters Ray Boccino, Phil Bell and Jimmy Pegorino. The mafia agrees to help Niko look for the person that betrayed him in exchange for doing some work. This chapter also sees Niko get closer to the McReary family, both in working and social terms.

GTA 4: Chapter 4 mission guide

In this last section of the game, Niko is forced to make a decision which will have major impacts on the final outcome of the story. There are two possible outcomes, so it is recommended that you save your progress before making the decision, and that way you can go back later and try the alternative outcome.

Grand Theft Auto 4 Vehicles

GTA protagonists are a lazy bunch - the occasional action their feet ever see while going about their daily business will either be between the driver's side doors of stolen automobiles, or short side-to-side maneouveres as they hose the gang population of a small inner-city suburb with machine-gun fire. The ever-generous supply of road hogs and grocery getters have formed the diverse bedrock that is GTA's cars, bikes, trains and aircraft. Here we have a lightly-toasted record of the various means of transport we have seen in the official screenshots and trailers, but bare in mind there will be plenty more in the final game - we just haven't seen enough of it yet...
